Reconstructing Florida Avenue

For those of you who experience the beauty of the Florida / New York Avenue intersection and the Sherman Avenue reconstruction, we will soon have a chaos of our very own. DDoT has proposed reconstructing Florida Avenue from U Street to Sherman. I am not sure why they have to do this since the road seems perfectly serviceable but who am I to turn down improvements in city services.

I looked for the drawing on their website but could not find them. If you want to see them, email me and I can forward them to you.

Option 1: Adds a island and crosswalk at Bella, reduces Florida to one lane each way in front of Rhapsody with a bike lane on each side and a middle turning lane, expands the island across from Duffys, extends the sidewalk in front of Rhapsody by our driveway and V Street but leaves the parking (we would lose part of our loading zone in front) and expands island where Sherman comes in.

Option 2:  Adds two islands including one between gas station and 930 club, a crosswalk at Bella, keeps Florida two lanes each way in front of Rhapsody, expands the island across from Duffys, extends the sidewalk in front of Rhapsody by our driveway and V Street but leaves the parking (we would lose part of our loading zone in front) and expands island where Sherman comes in.

Option 3:  No islands or crosswalk, Florida becomes 1 lane northbound and two lanes South in front of Rhapsody changes to 2 north 1 south at W Street, adds bike lanes north & south, expands the sidewalk in front of Duffys and removes the island, extends the sidewalk just in front of Rhapsody driveway leaves the parking (we would still lose part of our loading zone in front) and removes island at Sherman and expands sidewalk on east side of the street. Vermont and Sherman lose their wide entrance onto Florida and have a concrete median between north south lanes.
