The Central Mission building at 14th and R Street has finally been sold and will be renovated into Boutique condos by the architect Eric Colbert, designer of much of U Street.
As a realtor I am happy that there are more apartments going in on 14th Street but as a resident I am not excited. The building will be split into 50 different high priced units but have no parking for any. As another slap in the face to the neighborhood, they are thinking of naming it The Mission to remember the 140 homeless men who used to live there. That I think is tacky and an affront to the gentrification of the neighborhood.
I celebrate the greatness of what U Street used to be but don’t think we need to insult members of the community who have moved out because they never owned the ground they slept on.
